incident. both officers faced first and second degree assault charges. a developing story this morning. the search is under way for two virginia hikers missing in montana. neal peckens of herndon and jason hiser left for a trip in glacier national park last week. family members reported them missing friday when they didn't catch their flight home. both are veterinarians. yesterday they searched the hiking trails and found tracks in the area and a fire ring. they say it may be evidence of the missing men. they also have the hike permits, which may narrow the search area >> we know they have a back country permit, and that showed where they would be hiking. we've got a high probability area of where they were. perhaps the weather is playing something with this. we're not sure what's going on, but we'll continue to do what we can. >> park rangers say the men may have gone off trail due to the high winds and snow. new this morning, a look at just how close the race for president is. president obama leads mitt romney by just three percentage points among likely voters.

that's according to the latest washington post/abc news poll, and that is within the poll's margin of error. the president's lead has actually grown by 1% since before the first debate with his republican rival, a debate most people say mitt romney won. >> both candidates will be keeping low profiles today as they prepare for tomorrow night's second debate. president obama is preparing in williamsburg, virginia. mitt romney is in boston. obama campaign aides say the president has watched that first debate. they say he won't make the same mistakes again. >> i think he's going to be aggressive for making the case of his view of where we should go as a country. >> president can change his style. he can change his tactics. he can't change his record, and he can't change his policies, and that's what this election about. >> tomorrow night's town hall style debate will focus on domestic and foreign policy. the president will likely face questions about the white house's response to the deadly attack on the u.s. consulate in libya last month. if you haven't registered to

mastermind of the attacks. relatives of the victims will watch the trials at forts around the country, including here in maryland. county officials need help finding a missing elderly man. charles turner was last seen leaving his house on bosley road in ellicott city yesterday. he told family members he'd be back and never returned. he suffers from dementia, has no cell phone, and requires multiple medications. if you see him, call 911. redskins fans can rejoice this morning. the losing streak at fedex field is officially over. >> ponder throws. the interception. picked off by madieu williams. >> the skins defense stepped up, forcing three turnovers and getting a touchdown on one interception. quarterback robert griffin iii had a big touchdown run in the fourth quarter to seal the win for the skins 38-26 against the minnesota vikings. >> coach shawn, the tight end coach, felt me run by him because of the gust of wind.

a deadly fire from a storage facility in manassas. news 4's megan mcgrath with the details. megan? >> reporter: we have extensive damage here at the store-all storage facility in manassas. this fire broke out a little after 11:00 this morning. 85 units were impacted here. take a look at this video. you can get an idea of the extent of the damage. some of the storage units filled with still smoldering debris, everything in sight, a complete loss. they had 144 firefighters, some coming from neighboring jurisdictions here on the scene to put out this blaze. they're not exactly sure what started it, but they believe it started in the center of a building here at this facility, that it went up to the roof. once it hit the roof area, it spread out on either side, impacting the entire building. 85 units have been destroyed. we're told there were four cars in various units, a couple of

motorcycles that were damaged although we're told the cars might be able to be saved. they've got smoke damage. they'll have to take a closer look when the sun comes out. there was a lot of structural damage done to this building. we've got buckled walls, cracked walls. also, we're told the roof is unstable. so it's been condemned. at this point, firefighters are not able to go inside to bring out the rest of the smoldering debris. >> we're not even allowed in. it's unsafe for firefighters that go in. we're waiting on heaviry machinery to come in so that we can pull the debris away and make sure it's out. >> looks like some of the stuff's been pulled out, but there's still a lot of stuff inside, and you can't touch it. >> plenty of stuff inside. units we weren't even able to get into because it's in the middle of a building. >> reporter: and so still a lot of work to be done here. firefighters remain on the scene. we'll bring you updates throughout the morning. reporting live in manassas, megan mcgrath, news 4. aaron, back to you. >> megan, thank you. the 14-year-old pakistani girl shot by the taliban is now

in the united kingdom for treatment. taliban operatives admitted to attacking malala yousufzai last week. she's an outspoken girl who pushed for more girls to receive schooling. police have arrested at least three suspects in connection with the attack, but the two gunmen are still on the run. the taliban is claiming responsibility for a deadly attack on a pakistani police station. at least six police officers were killed in that attack, which happened outside the northwest city of peshawar. dozens of mill assistaitants st building, sparking a shootout that lasted for hours. the militants set fire to the police station and set fire to several vehicles before they finally left. 6:18. right now a hearing is under way for the former captain of the shipwrecked costa concordia. francesco scuttino is seen here. the former captain is accused of

manslaughter, abandoning ship, and other charges. he denies the charges. in january, 32 people on board died when the ship capsized off the coast of italy. the pentagon is trying to figure out how a nuclear submarine and a navy cruiser collided. both the uss montpelier and the uss san jacinto are based in norfolk, virginia, although the pentagon is not saying where the collision took place. no one was hurt in the saturday afternoon collision. it's not yet known how badly the vessels were ge damaged. this morning police in florida trying to figure out how a woman crashed into a scrap metal business. the speeding car slammed sideways into the building saturday morning. fortunately, no one was inside the building at the time. the woman behind the wheel was taken to the hospital. at this point, no charges have been filed. a new study shows the controversial hpv vaccine does not have an effect on girls' sexual activity. the study from kaiser permanente looked at medical records from close to 1,400 vaccinated and

unvaccinated girls. it revealed no difference in the sexual activity from the ages of 11 to 18. the cdc recommends the girls get the vaccine at the age of 11 or 12 to prevent cervical cancer. a new study shows even a little more sleep could make a big difference in behavior. researchers in canada studied students ages 7 to 11. half went to bed earlier than normal. the others had to stay up later than usual. the kids who stayed up late were not only tired but were more impulsive, irritable, and quick to lose their tempers. even a half hour more sleep could result in a huge improvement in behavior. don't you hate getting stuck behind a slow driver? imagine ending up behind a vehicle just going 2 miles per hour. and that's how fast, or slow we should say, the space shuttle "endeavour" was traveling as it made its way to the new home at the california science museum. it took "endeavour" three days

heading over to the beltway, you know this, outer loop, as you make your way past i-95 heading to georgia avenue, you are sluggish. solid delays, thick delays as you make your way between i-95 and university boulevard. travel lanes are open, no accidents. aaron, over to you. >> thank you, danella. an austrian skydiver made history this weekend, becoming the first human to travel faster than the speed of sound in free fall. felix baumgartner, you saw him there, he jumped from 24 miles up. he reached speeds of more than 833 miles per hour before he did this. landed safely back on earth. baumgartner used a special capsule to travel up into the stratosphere. he wore a high tech suit to shield himself on the way down. during part of the fall, baumgartner's visor fogged up, and he started tumbling in air. it took him a minute to right himself. fortunately, he had a mission control team on the ground, monitoring his every move.

than the speed of sound. yesterday the 89-year-old sat in the backseat of an f-15 eagle that broke the sound barrier more than 30,000 feet above california's mojave desert. the plane is quite different than the experimental bell-x1 rocket he powered on that historic flight on october 14th, 1947. in other headlines, the meningitis outbreak is now up to 205 confirmed cases nationwide. 15 of those case,in maryland. 34 in virginia. the cdc says the number of deaths now stands at 15 across 14 states. this outbreak is linked to steroid shots used for back pain made by a specialty pharmacy in massachusetts. the medication has since been recalled. a woman in minnesota, now the first one to file a lawsuit against that pharmacy. 6:34, the new mexico food company related to a salmonella food company is expanding its recall. sun land shut down its peanut

processing plant last week. this comes after at least 35 salmonella cases reported in 19 states, including maryland and virginia. sunland is now recalling everything made at its contaminated plant since march 2010. the products can be found at trader joe's, giant, whole foods, and target. friends and co-workers of two men seriously injured in a fiery crash are raising money to help cover the medical bills. the two men work as bar backs at penn social in the district. two weeks ago, police say a drunk driver rear-ended them on georgia avenue in northwest, causing their car to burst into flames. the men suffered third degree burns over 40% of their bodies. doctors are treating them at washington hospital center's burn unit. >> the least we could do is come support one of our co-workers, one of our family, one of our industry co-workers for something to senseless and disgusting that happened. >> organizers raised more than $3,000 to help cover medical expenses. the men are expected to be in the burn unit for the next six months. opening statements expected

today in the trial of former d.c. police officer kenneth furr. he's accused of shooting three people while off-duty in august of 2011. a police arrest affidavit says furr solicited a transgender woman for sex outside a cvs in northwest d.c. when she refused, he became angry and allegedly threatened her and one of her friends with a gun. a few minutes later, furr confronted them, jumped on the hood of their car, and shot through the windshield, hitting three people. all the victims suffered nonlife-threatening injuries. this weekend susan g. komen walk for the cure raised nearly $4 million. nearly 6,100 participants helped raise $3.8 million for cancer research. that's down from last year's donations. last year the walk for the cure in washington raised $7 million. registration was down nearly 40% for this year's walk, and that could be because the breast cancer charity's unsuccessful move to defund planned parent hood in february.

this week religious groups will call on metro to donate money it received from a controversial advertising campaign. the coalition includes representatives from jewish, christian, and muslim groups and wants metro to donate proceeds from these ads to support human rights. the ads equate muslim radicals with savages. today the american civil liberties union is expected to file suit against morgan stanley. according to "the new york times," the aclu is accusing the investment bank of predatory loans far gettitargeting african-americans. the loans came through now defunct subprime lender new century corporation. the aclu will seek class action status. three weeks until election day, and just three points separate the candidates. that's according to the latest washington post/abc news poll. president obama leads mitt romney 49% to 46% to likely voters. the race may not change much before voters head to the polls.
